Polly Hill Arboretum, West Tisbury

The Arboretum’s website details how, in order to expand the plant palette on Martha’s Vineyard, Polly Hill began this horticultural sanctuary in her 50s nearly a half century ago. One thing you gain by visiting this wonderful place in person (and perhaps, virtually as well) is a sense of how one individual vision can really affect others. As you stroll the tree-lined lanes, the weathered stonewalls and Stewardia bark weave a spell. But this idyllic island spot is not just otherworldly, but also world-class in its horticultural sophistication. The staff is extremely generous and knowledgeable plus, my “Before & After” class rocked. [My first night on the island, I was visited by a bat. Feel free to email me with your symbolic interpretations.]
