Discovering the Garden as Spirit, Art and Earth

As a place of discovery, the countryside has much to offer us. In providing space, it allows us to explore more freely the elements of spirit, art and earth. When we learn to recognize and honor the landscape levels that comprise depth, we can take those experiences home and implement them in our own gardens. By extending this consciousness of our green spaces, we can become part of the solution that is working towards a sustainable planet.

Before the workshop, please read the book Nature, Spirits and Elemental Beings by Marko Pogacnik (by Findhorn Press and easily available on Amazon). This workshop will be lead by Julie Siegel of www.J.SiegelDesigns.com . I'm including Julie's bio: "Fine Gardening magazine describes Julie as having combined her background in dance, animation, architecture and writing with her love of plants to create gardens that are full of energy and speak to the larger regional aesthetics. Being raised by a photographer and a painter guaranteed Julie's creative sensibility. Her decades of teaching and public speaking developed strong communication skills and independent thought. These have become essential tools for assisting clients in transforming the abstract ideas that eventually become manifest as landscapes. Julie's involvement with various community, environmental, and social projects links her professional activity with her humanitarian beliefs." Enough said. But, so much offered.

Oftentimes when we imagine agarden's design or improvements to an existing landscape, we forget to consider how much light effects how we see the color or texture of plants. This class will discuss examples of using light to your advantage. A starting point will be examining how some of the great artists used light, color and texture. Then these methods will be applied to garden design.

Landscape designer Julie Siegel will discuss examples from the larger landscape, the arts, and some of her company's projects to highlight often-overlooked steps in the process. Before& After: Scaling the Steps of Landscape Design

Saturday, October 4, 10 am - 3 pm
The Polly Hill Arboretum
West Tisbury, Massachusetts

"Before and After" shots especially engage gardeners. In this class, landscape designer, Julie Siegel, clarifies the process. Through examples from client projects, she will walk you through the design steps she paces when creating a new or revised landscape. Emphasizing both individual and integrated creativity as well as attunement to the environment, her approach begins with an in-depth examination of internal and external factors that comprise each person's orientation to the landscape. Then, she will focus on in-depth assessment & analysis. Julie believes that to realize a well-designed landscape, the gardener must first thoroughly explore particular site conditions as well as their own dreams for the space. Participants will learn how to recognize and to enhance drama in the garden. Her conclusion addresses commonly experienced design challenges and presents helpful criteria for plant choice. Bring a bag lunch.

Meet at the Wakeman Center.
